Limerick Institute of Technology and Institute of Technology Tralee have welcomed the announcement of €2.5 million funding from Enterprise Ireland for a joint research centre that will develop the use of a variety of food by-products and marine algae into nutritionally valuable compounds and natural pigments that will benefit the Irish Food Industry.

Shannon Applied Biotechnology Centre (ABC) will address the applied research needs of regional industries encompassing the food, agricultural and aquacultural industry sectors and work with them to develop and maintain a competitive advantage in today’s global economy to help safeguard jobs and to create new jobs in the future.

The importance of the food industry to the Irish economy is demonstrated by the fact that prepared consumer foods now accounts for exports of €600 million from a standing start 5 years ago. The food industry and other sectors are growing at a rapid rate as a result of scientific research demonstrating the strong link between diet and health. This, coupled with consumer interest in health-promoting foods, is fuelling the functional food sector.
